Unlike
Wellington, who had the uncanny knack of being able to
predict what lay ahead of him, we have no such luxury.
However, all being well, and the Gods on our side, we
intend standing on the following battlefields on the
occasion of their 200th anniversaries:
Rolica
Vimeiro Corunna Talavera Busaco
Albuera Badajoz Salamanca
Vittoria Maya
Nivelle Orthes Bayonne Quatre Bras
Waterloo
It
may well be that we'll will be standing on our own on the
ramparts of Badajoz on the night of 6 April 2012, or on
the ridge at Maya on 25 July 2013, but all being well,
we'll be there. After all, these things don't come around
too often! Some of the anniversaries, such as those at
Albuera and Salamanca, for example, will form part of
mainstream tours, whereas others, like Orthes, Nivelle and
Badajoz, will entail special visits, probably of four
days' duration each. We have no idea whether events are
planned to commemorate the battles. If so, it will be a
bonus. Fortunately, most of the above anniversaries take
place very close to or on a weekend, which should give us
the opportunity of attending any planned events. The whole
programme is, of course, designed to lead up to the 200th
anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo in 2015, after which
we can all go home!
