Crimean War Walks

This tour is very different to the usual coach-based tour to the Crimea. Like our popular walking tours to the Peninsula and Waterloo, this walking-based tour gets you to the very heart of the action, taking guests across the famous battlefields of the Crimean War. We walk the length of the Alma battlefield, viewing it from Russian and Allied perspectives, we examine in depth the Inkerman battlefield, explore the defensive lines, and walk the site of the British siege lines. Balaklava is explored at length by walking the entire length of the Charge of the Light Brigade, whilst the great battle of the Chernaya is not forgotten. It isn't all walking, however, for we visit the world famous Panorama, the museum of the Black Sea Fleet, and St Vladimir's Cathedral. We also enjoy boat trips round Sevastopol harbour and Balaklava and the Black Sea. A superb tour.

Day 1. Fly London to Simferopol via Kiev. Transfer to Sevastopol and check-in at the newly refurbished and now very smart 3-star Hotel Sevastopol.

Day 2. Breakfast. The Alma. We begin our tour by crossing the Alma at Almatamack, walking the gullies used by the French to gain the heights held by the Russians before walking east along the top of the plateau as far as the Post Road. We then re-cross the river by the modern bridge and examine the British line of attack. We cross the Alma for a third time before covering the final advance to the Great Redoubt. The walk ends here amidst the various memorials and mass graves. Return to Sevastopol. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3. Breakfast. Sevastopol. We begin by walking from Cathcart’s Hill to our vantage point on Green Hill to get an overview of the siege. We visit the sites of some of Fenton’s and Robertson’s famous photographs, and also the British siege batteries. We then cross to the Mamelon for an Allied view of the Malakhov. Return to hotel. Overnight stay.

Day 4. Breakfast. Balaklava. We begin with an overview from Raglan’s position on the Sapoune Ridge before driving to Kamara for the Russian perspective. We then begin our walk, exploring Canrobert’s Hill, the South valley, the 93rd’s knoll, and the scene of the Charge of the Heavy Brigade. We then end by following the Charge of the Light Brigade along the North Valley. Our day ends with a boat trip round Balaklava harbour and out into the Black Sea. Return to hotel. Overnight stay.

Day 5. Breakfast. Inkerman. We begin our extensive tour by walking south from the northern end of the Careenage Ravine, emerging into the Wellway, in the heart of the British position. We continue along Home Ridge before walking down the Kitspur, following Cathcart’s ill-fated attack, as far as St Clement’s Ravine, passing below the Sandbag Battery. We emerge from the ravine at the Barrier before following the final British advance to Shell Hill. Return to hotel. Overnight stay.

Day 6. Breakfast. The Battle of the Chernaya, the biggest battle of the Crimean War. We begin by walking the Russian advance from a position south of the Mackenzie heights, following as route parallel with the old road leading to the hidden remains of the Traktir bridge. We cross the river and end at the battlefield memorial. Free afternoon. Return to hotel. Overnight stay.

Day 7. Breakfast. A more relaxing day as we visit sites in Sevastopol, such as the museum of the Black Sea Fleet, the famous Panorama, St Vladimir’s Cathedral and the Russian cemetery. We visit the Malakhov and Redan to see how it all ended. The day ends with a boat trip round Sevastopol Roadstead. Farewell dinner in Balaklava. Return to hotel. Overnight stay.

Day 8. Breakfast. Drive to Simferopol for the return flight to London via Kiev.
